Leta’s Book Review: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas (SPOILERS)

Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas

Fantasy, Adult

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

There’s no way that I can talk about House of Sky and Breath without spoilers. I’m terribly sorry. So, this is your SPOILER WARNING. Continuing on past here will definitely spoil this novel for you. If that’s alright with you, or you’ve already read this crazy book, welcome! Let’s get started.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL SARAH J. MAAS BOOKS (Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City series)

I know this book wasn’t on my TBR for August. I know that I came on in February and I should have finished it a long time ago. But I also know that I needed to be ready for this book. The emotional damage it was going to bring with it.

House of Sky and Breath more than delivered. It continues the story of Bryce and Hunt about six months after the end of House of Earth and Blood when Bryce made the Drop and received her powers in order to save Lunathion from hordes of demons. A few things have changed now: the people of Lunathion know who Bryce is, a new Archangel is on their way to Lunathion, and there are new players on the board that threaten to bring down the carefully made peace. Oh, and Bryce decided that she wanted to wait until the winter solstice to sleep with Hunt. After all the steamy scenes that end before they can begin in House of Earth and Blood, too.

I do agree with a few other reviewers in that there could have been a lot fewer pages. There was a lot of repetition and it seemed like every character needed to gather and talk after each piece of information was found. My edition is over 800 pages. It probably could have been closer to 650 easily. But honestly, I read it so fast that it really didn’t make a difference. It didn’t feel like I’d read 800 pages.

I finished this novel yelling and smiling so hard that my face hurt. It was so perfect. It brings everything Sarah has ever written together in a way that makes sense. Now that I’ve finished rereading the Throne of Glass series, I can see that something similar to Bryce’s journey was planned from the very beginning. I can’t wait to see what happens next…and see if any of my theories about the Maas-verse at large are true. I won’t say exactly what happens here, despite the spoiler warning, because it’s far too impactful to spoil it for someone. I will say this: I hope you’ve read the A Court of Thorns and Roses series before this one. Everything will make so much more sense.

I’ll always hype up and recommend Sarah’s books, so I won’t spend any more time trying to sell this one to you other than to say that this novel is HOT, STEAMY, and SHOCKING. The SECRETS. The CHARACTERS. House of Sky and Breath is the absolute perfect match to House of Earth and Blood in every way. So, in some ways, this is less of a review and more of a rant, but I needed it. If you’ve read House of Sky and Breath, leave a comment down below and tell me your favourite scene!
